I was playing here
with the ripple of water, and the ripple of voice. When I first showed
this film I gave a little introduction to it by talking about the late
19th century linguist Ferdinand de Saussur. Saussur at one point illustrated
his theory of signification by describing the 'signifier' (eg words) as
being like the juncture between the sea and air. The water was the 'referent'
while the air was the 'signified' - the 'concept' or 'meaning' grasped,
and the signifier itself was the ripple. Something like that anyway. When
shooting this film, I couldn't help but think of this and to 'hear' the
ripples as 'voices'.
